Employee
Benefits at HealthCo
HealthCo is a nonprofit
health care organization which involves many units including; clinics,
rehabilitation units, hospice, therapy facilities among other specialized
centers. It has got many workers which to attend to clients in each department.
However, the organization is more focused on the performance by each employee
than their welfare. Some of key leaders in the organization tend to manipulate
the other workers to emulate their tendency of over-working in order improve
the status of the organization. Below is a discussion of how to deal with some
issues in HealthCo organization;
1.
How
to conduct a diagnosis of the situation at HealthCo
The management
committee of the HealthCo organization should be advised to set standard goals
for each department. This can be achieved through negotiating with the workers
in order to make sure that they are comfortable with the working conditions. All
workers should be allowed to present their claims concerning the challenges
they face while at work (Salisbury, 2010).
The leaders should also
introduce better ways to ensure that workers perform well in their duties
rather than comparing their level of performance. These ways may include;
giving awards to the best team of the year or awarding sponsorships to the best
performing teams to attend various seminars concerning their job. These
initiatives will improve the performance of the employees since they will be
making effort to win the awards. Moreover, they will be motivated to work hard
since their welfare will be being taken care of.
The organization should
also train more workers to gain adequate expertise in various departments in
order to avoid getting stranded when some workers go on leave. It should ensure
that all workers can be held responsible to represent the organization in
various meetings concerning their departments. This will ensure that the
organization’s activities are run normally even in absence of some employees.
There should also be
fair treatment to all employees regarding their daily challenges (Haigh, 2001). This is because
discriminating some workers will make them to start having negative attitude
towards their work and even their employers. However, the policy of the
organization concerning the new employees should not be violated on the basis
of offering fair treatment to all workers. For instance, in order to start
enjoying some benefits, an employee may be required to serve the organization
for a certain period of time.
The organization should
not force workers to resume duties during their free time. Each employee should
be given a chance to decide whether to work during his free time or not. If an
employee confesses that he or she has some other duties to attend to during the
free time, this should not create enmity between the employee and the employers
(Adair, 2000).
2.
Diagnosis
of the situation in the scenarios and the case
In the first scenario,
Pat should not have been angry with Chris because he declined to make the trip
to New York. Chris gave genuine reasons as to why he was unable to make the
trip. He could not have left his elderly parents and his young daughter on
their own in order to attend the trip. Pat should have communicated with Chris
early enough in order to give him ample time to find someone to take care of
his family during the time he would be attending the trip. He should have given
him the chance to decide whether to attend or not instead of trying to blackmail
him through praises. The problem in this scenario can be avoid by ensuring that
the there are several workers with adequate expertise in the various
departments rather than depending on one person.
In the second scenario,
Francis understands that workers should be given time to attend to their
personal issues. When Blair decided to take some days off get his father
settled, Francis allowed and thanked him for the good work he had been doing
though he knew that the organization needed his help very much. This made Blair
to feel that he was working for the best organization. Therefore, leaders in
each department should relate well with the other employees and assist them in
making some decisions concerning their work. This makes them to work willingly
and communicate freely the issues affecting their work with their leaders. A
good relationship between all parties in the organization will lead to
improvement in performance of each employee.
In the third scenario,
since Robin presents a case which goes against the policy of the organization,
it becomes hard for Mercer to make a quick decision. The organization should be
committed to ensuring fair treatment to all employees. If Robin is allowed to
be working part-time while other employees work fulltime, the organization will
be going against its policy. However, if he is denied the opportunity, the
organization will lose important expertise since he is willing to quit job and
look for other organizations which will grant him the chance to work part-time.
Moreover, through working with the medical students, Robin would make the
HealthCo to attract top students to the organization hence improving its
performance.
The HR should accept
the Robin’s request since he will continue working for the organization within
the specified duration.
Leaders should set a
good example for the employees to follow but not to force them to work
over-time as they do. The needs of the employees should be considered while
making the possible decisions promote the status of the organization (Adair, 2000).
3.
The key
issues in the HealthCo becoming a top company in terms of work-life benefits
The organization should consider offering important
benefits to the employees such as extended leave payment, referral services,
concierge services, and provide fitness facilities for the workers. Promoting
good health for the workers will ensure quality performance in their duties
hence improving the overall activities of the organization. Offering concierge
services like dry cleaning will help the workers to save the time and money
they would have spend in taking the clothes to dry cleaners out of their work
place. This might make some of the workers to spend the time in doing work in
their departments hence promoting the activities of the organization.
Employees should also be relieved from being
overworked by employing more workers in various departments (Bhadra, 2005). This will make them to start working
in shifts hence having adequate time to rest before resuming working. The
organization should also award sponsorships to their employees to attend to various
seminars concerning their job in order to enable them to gain adequate
expertise. This will help the organization to avoid forcing some workers to
resume duties during the free time.
In order to ensure smooth running of all activities
at HealthCo, there should be good relationship between the employees and the
leaders. Employees should be allowed important benefits during their working
days and even after retirement. This ensures that all workers are comfortable
with their working conditions hence being motivated to work hard (Bhadra, 2005).
