Though glasses are made to prevent eye strain,
sometimes they may work the opposite. The wrong prescription may cause the
patient to have eye strain, fatigue and lead to headache. Therefore, one should
be careful to use the prescribed glasses by a doctor or a qualified optician.
These glasses are not recommended to be used by children under the age of 13 or
any person who has had a Lasik surgery. If you ever had a Lasik surgery, you
should consult a doctor on the risks of eye impact damage before you start
using them. For children below the age of 13, the glasses may impair developing
vision hence they should be discouraged from using them.
However, according to Dr. James Salz who is a
clinical spokesperson of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, at the age of
6, the eyes of a human being are fully mature. This means that glasses cannot
impair development of vision as it was stated through the Google warning. He
added that glasses can only cause dryness and irritation of eyes if used for a
prolonged period of time. The effect would only make one uncomfortable and not
possibly cause eye damage.
Eye strain may also occur depending on the power of
the lenses and the refractive index of the glasses. They may be made excessively
thick for high power prescriptions hence causing refractive distortions in
their periphery. This results to barrel effects which lead to eye strain hence
causing one to have a headache.
How
to avoid eye strain when using glasses
First, you should ensure that you use the prescribed
glasses by your doctor or any other qualified optician. Ensure that the
thickness of the glasses does not cause refractive distortions which result to
barrel effects hence causing the eyes to strain much to ensure a clear vision.
Secondly, you should avoid using glasses for a long
period of time. If you are not reading or examining any material, then you
don’t have to use your glasses. Even when using the glasses, you should ensure
a good rate of blinking to avoid dryness of the eyes and the resultant
headache.
Thirdly, you should ensure that you replace your
glasses after the stated period by your optician. This is because the lenses
continuously lose power hence resulting to reduced performance. This causes the
eyes [1]to
strain much for a clear vision hence resulting to fatigue.
