The American Civil War
The American Civil War can be termed to have erupted due to increased differences in both social and political cultures between the Northern and the Southern States of America. These differences led to divided opinions regarding matters of state and federal rights, taxes, and tariff and internal improvements (Gallagher, 1997). Moreover, a difference in opinions regarding the fate of slave trade in the American society also became aggravated along the territorial lines. The Northern States had become more industrialized than the Southern ones hence seeing no need for promoting slave trade. On the other hand, the Southern States had been actively engaged in agricultural activities and they were in dire need for laborers. They depended on the African slaves to work on their farms and also act as trade commodities whereby their exchange would help them to settle their debts.
The Southern States consider slave ownership as a form of commanding corporate wealth and also gaining political power. Therefore, they differed with the Northern States on the issue of slave trade abolishment. The increased differences led the Southern States to declare themselves as Confederates and sought to be independent from the rest of the American society. This act aggravated enmity between the Northern and the Southern States hence leading to the outbreak of a civil war. The Northern army was led by Ulysses Grant, the Union General-in-Chief, while the Confederate army was led by General Robert Lee. Despite having a larger army, the Confederates lost in the war. There are various reasons that led to their defeat which include; lack of effective fighting tactics, inadequate power to control their sustenance, and even the “obvious” attitude of victory due to the large size of their army. The approximate size of the nation was 750000 square miles while the Union owned only 3000 square miles. Therefore, the Confederates were sure about winning the war hence failed to arrange effective fighting tactics. Lee did not take adequate time to organize his army and all requirements that were necessary to win the war hence ended up risking the lives of his soldiers (Rubin, 2005).
The Confederates had gained a lot of wealth from cotton trade hence they were too certain that their high economic status would enable them to acquire all requirements that were necessary for the war. Therefore, Confederates were more equipped than the Union army. Lack of adequate power to control sustenance saw the Confederates get starved when Grant destroyed their means of sustenance hence reducing Lee’s fighting effectiveness significantly. Despite having an underequipped and fewer soldiers, Grant did not risk any lives but used a considerate number of them to secure maximum fighting advantages.  According to Rubin (2005), destruction of the confederates’ sustenance resulted to a drastic drop in their economic status hence increasing their poverty levels (p.274).
The Union army had also sought strong allies that would support it through providing the necessary materials in case need occurred. This act made it secure from misfortunes in case the Confederates ambushed their sustenance. According to Holt (2005), the Union army had realized that it was disadvantaged due to its lower size and less equipment compared to their enemies. Therefore, it took time to plan for effective strategy that will reduce the effectiveness of the Confederate army hence being able to defeat them (p.517).
